The cars and trucks are scurrying ants, and gusts of wind try to shove me over the edge. I hold on, but just barely. How easy it would be to let go. To give in. To be all that I am destined to be.

My necktie flutters like a flag in a violent storm, a gift to me from my son when he was five. The material is bright blue with a huge red S and shield at the bottom.

"Do you like it?" Gregory had asked, his blue eyes beaming.

I laid it between the sheets of tissue paper and replaced the box top, flashing a smile. "Of course," I told him, tossing the box aside.

The Dreammaker
Published: January, 2007 in Beyond Centauri
When the boy moved in across the street, Christy could tell he wasn't quite normal. His jet black hair sat on his head like a crooked beret—long on one side and short on the other. His eyes were bold and bright, and his clothes hung so low that he had to hike them up every time he sat.

He sat a lot—under the Oak tree next to the road—reading comic books. And he watched everyone and anyone who drove or walked by, his gaze following them as though staring into their very souls looking for something. Then he would turn back to his comics. ...

Half Moon Tree

“Ready to go?”

James scuffed his shoe against a floorboard, his hands stuffed deep into the pockets of his denim overalls. Micah stared out from behind a screen door. Distant thunder and a bitter wind added to the cold sickness hovering in Jim’s chest. ...

The Tri-County Paper Airplane Throwing Contest
December, 2006
This was going to be my year. I could feel it. I had finally come up with the perfect airplane. It wasn’t all that sleek, which was fine. You didn’t win for sleek. You win because your airplane simply flies farther than all the others. ...

He vomited. He vomited so forcefully that his lungs tore from his chest and burned inside his throat. Gasping, he fell to the ground, clutching at the cramp in his side. John had never allowed himself to give in to the pain. But now he had to rest. ...

A Time to Die
February, 2006
He retreats into the shadow of an alleyway, distorted reflections of street lamps on the wet pavement, the sweet scent of fresh rain cleansing his mind. He washes the blood from his hands in a puddle as another Model A sputters past.

The adrenaline rush subsides, and he is calm. In an hour, he will return home, his almost insatiable desire quenched enough to continue with his other life—a life in another time. ...

Clouds
Posted: May, 2006
I wrote Clouds as part of a larger choir program that was eventually performed in the spring of 2002. Here, you will here just the score, although in the final performance, it was sung by a choir accompanied by a band. The song contrasted the clouds of doubt and depression we face in life with the heavenly clouds that ultimately will bring the return of our Lord and Saviour.

There and Back
Posted: March, 2006
Instrumental only. A few years ago, I wrote this song as an experiment. In fact, it was originally just titled "Experiment". I was playing around with some melody/counter melody stuff. In the end, I think I was in a John Tesh mood, or something, because I feel it is somewhat influenced by his music. There and Back is short, and after you hear it, you'll understand the name of the title.
